Great Paradise, NL

A video I shot last summer in Great Paradise, a resettled community in Newfoundland. There have never been cars in this town. The only electricity comes from personal generators. No one lives all year round. Your cell phone won’t get reception.

My girlfriend’s parents grew up in this town, which was resettled in the 1960s (everyone was forced to leave and move in to bigger city centres). There were wild horses here well in to the 80s. Folks return to Great Paradise every summer and are slowly bringing the town back to life. It is one of the most incredible places I’ve ever been. This video was shot over two days in August, 2014.

  1. You can walk to nearby resettled communities of Little Paradise Great Paradise via trails in the community.

  2. Lovely video, Jud. I’m just now reading “Galore” and your wee film is perfect accompaniment to the book.

    • Thanks Michael! I’ve been meaning to read that book myself – his writing is so great!
